Dear Junior designer

You know, I’ve found myself in this place countless times before. Gazing at my portfolio, my CV, brimming with experiences, education, courses, and achievements. Yet, that familiar nagging sensation persists - the impostor syndrome.

I vividly recall my first months in the professional realm.

Regardless of the skills I honed, the courses I completed, the studies I delved into, and the projects I undertook, self-doubt lingered. Am I really a designer? In a world abundant with exceptional designers, why would anyone choose me? Why SHOULD anyone chose me? I dismissed my own abilities, overlooking the unique perspective, creativity, and determination that set me apart. Little did I realize, these very qualities would transform me not just into a designer, but a standout one in my own right.

Now, with several years in this industry, a truth has dawned on me

…we’re all simply doing our best, learning as we go. Consider this: each of us charts a distinct course. We sometimes take detours, explore dead ends, or opt for the scenic route. And yes, there are moments when we reflect and think, "Perhaps there was a quicker or more economical way." But here’s the thing: hindsight is a luxury shared by all.

Every project, every sketch, every stroke of the pen - they all mark steps on the path of growth. It’s easy to forget this. We often compare ourselves to others, questioning our own abilities. Yet, it's vital to remember that every designer embarks on their journey from a different starting point. And let’s face it: we’ve all encountered that gnawing uncertainty, questioning the depth of our own talents.

In moments haunted by impostor syndrome, remember this:

you do your best with the knowledge you possess at that moment. You invest your heart and soul into your work, making decisions based on your current understanding. And then you learn. and than you iterate. Isn't that the very essence of what we designers do? Yeah, sometimes we make the wrong decision. But that doesn’t define us. And if anyone makes you feel otherwise… don’t listen to them 😋

Our essence as designers lies in our passion, our dedication, and our resilience to press forward even when the road seems uncertain. Remember, your journey is unparalleled, and your voice as a designer is immeasurable, doubts and all. So keep moving forward.

Trust me, you're doing ok 🫶
